E219 is a food additive approved by the European Union (EU) and is used as an antifungal synthetic preservative in food products, drugs and cosmetics. This chemical is more effective against yeasts and fungi than against bacteria.

The chemical name for E219 is sodium methyl p-hydroxybenzoate.

E219 has been linked with to a numb mouth as well as irritation to the skin, and is banned in Australia.
