E217 is a food additive approved by the European Union (EU) and is used as an antifungal and antibacterial synthetic preservative in food products.

The preservative E217 is also known by the chemical name sodium propyl p-hydroxybenzoate.

E217 is banned in Australia and has been linked to a numb mouth as well as irritation to the skin.
