The Structure of Skin

Introductory Note: Knowledge of the structure of skin is essential for successful completion of courses in many bodywork therapies, such as massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, Indian head massage and others. In many cases the structure of the skin is part of a larger module that includes, for example, more about the physiology of these structures and associated aspects of pathology. (It is important for such therapists to be aware of and able to recognise certain common skin conditions because some might be contraindications to treatment, i.e. reasons not to proceed with a treatment.)

The following diagram illustrates the basic structure of the skin, labelling key components.

It may be useful preparation for, and/or revision of, courses in bodywork therapies.
