E214 is a food additive approved by the European Union (EU) and used as an antifungal and antibacterial synthetic preservative in tablets and capsules. It is more effective against yeasts and fungi than against bacteria. E214 is also used in cosmetics.

E214 is commonly known by the names ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate and ethyl paraben.

This preservative is banned in Australia. Its presence in cosmetics may result in allergic reactions to the skin.
