Supraspinatus

The supraspinatus muscles are a pair of deep muscles, one on each side of the body, located above the spine of the scapula, which is a feature on the scapula (shoulder bone). These can be studied in relation to the infraspinatus muscles, which are located below the spine of the scapula, on the scapula bone.

The supraspinatus muscles are among the four rotator cuff muscles (on each side of the body) that help to support the head of the humerus in place in the glenoid cavity. The rotator cuff muscles are listed below.

  • Initiates abduction of the shoulder, the deltoid muscle takes-over later in abduction of the shoulder.
