E304(i) is an additive approved by the EU (European Union). It is used as a synthetic antioxidant in food and drink products.

The common name for E304(i) is ascorbyl palmitate.

The antioxidant E304(i) is a fatty acid ester of ascorbic acid and is produced by the esterification (production of an ester by reacting alcohol and acid) of the fatty acid palmitate and ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is also known as Vitamin C.

E304(i) can work to prevent oxidation in the food colourings E160 and E161.

E304(i) might not be suitable for vegetarians because the palmitic acid used to produce it might be derived from animal fat. E304(i) is less effective as a source of vitamin C if taken orally, because it might break-down in the body before being digested and absorbed into the bloodstream.

Examples of food and drink products that may include E304 (i) and E304(ii):

• processed meat
• cereal
• margarine
