E309 is an additive approved by the EU (European Union). It is used as a synthetic antioxidant in food and drink products.

The common name for E309 is delta–tocopherol.

E309 acts as an antioxidant in fatty products, mostly to prevent olive oil turning rancid. As with E307, the strong flavour of E309 limits its applications in food products.

Examples of food/drink products that may include E309:

  • processed meat
  • cheese
  • vitamin enriched foods
