Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, UK.
It is home to the Scottish Parliament (devolved legislature of Scotland since 1999) as well as many other institutions such as the Scottish National Gallery, the National Museum of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland.
Edinburgh and its surrounding areas is one of the most popular UK tourist destinations outside London. Attractions include Edinburgh castle (shown below), Edinburgh zoo, the Royal Yacht Britannia and the Royal Scottish Academy as well as many shopping opportunities in and around Princes Street and elsewhere in the city.
The city of Edinburgh hosts many spectacular events and festivals throughout the year. Hogmanay celebrations begin on the last night of the year and bring in the new year with fireworks and revelry. On 30 April the Beltane Fire Festival takes place on Calton Hill. Edinburgh International Film Festival happens in June then the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe all take place in August. Outside of these and other large events there is always plenty to entertain visitors to Edinburgh in the form of musical and cultural experiences at the city's many theatres as well as sports fixtures of various types (football, rugby, athletics, ice-hockey, etc.).
