Wheal
A wheal (on the skin) is a rounded or flat-topped elevated lesion caused by broad flares of swollen skin containing an excessive accumulation of fluid.
The medical term for "swollen with an excessive accumulation of fluid" is edematous. (Although this word is not used in all textbooks, it is useful to be aware of its meaning.)
The word wheal is included in this section because it is a type of skin lesion.
See also types of skin lesions (all on one page). This may interest students of massage, reflexology, holistic treatments of various types, beauty therapies, and other health related courses.
