Children in conflict zones: Darfur, the DRC and Gaza
International childrens' charity UNICEF has warned that, right now, thousands of innocent people are caught up in violent conflicts around the world. During times like these, children are the most vulnerable.
UNICEF expressed concern about about the impact of the current violence in Gaza where over half of the population are children. The UN Office of the Humanitarian Coordinator (OCHA) indicates that children are among the many victims killed and injured as a result of the recent air strikes. UNICEF is providing critical humanitarian assistance at this time, including medical supplies and shelter.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the situation remains volatile with thousands of children displaced and vulnerable to disease and malnutrition. Meanwhile, five years on in the conflict in Darfur, western Sudan, children continue to suffer in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. It is estimated that 4.7 million people are now caught up in the conflict.
UNICEF is working tirelessly to ease the suffering of the many children caught up in these conflicts.
